The Birchanger Woods Trust
The geology is complex, with a succession of boulder-clay, glacial sands and gravels, London Clay, and Woolwich and Reading beds: however, the distinctions are not apparent on the surface.
The soils are mostly moderately acid and are somewhat impermeable, becoming waterlogged in wet seasons.
A stream passes through the wood, varying from a small torrent after very wet weather to totally dry in summer.
